I propse that the 40p in the £ tax band should be raised to £60,000 pa.

The reluctance of this and previous governments to adequately increase the threshold for higher rate tax payers has resulted in a number of people in comfortable but essentially modest jobs becoming higher rate taxpayers e.g middle ranking teachers, nursing managers and police inspectors.

This creates a disincentive to progress and also results in a marginal rate of tax in excess of 100% when child benefit is withdrawn for those whose incomes are a couple of thousand of pounds within the higher rate tax band
