China seems to have decided that on the basis of tenuous historical links,and ignoring international law, the potentially oil rich and strategically vital archipelago should belong to China.

Britain needs to defend its ownership of the Spratly islands [and Sichuan and the Ningbo treaty port] too which it has more of a historical right than China.
