Petition Keep the Bishops in the House of Lords

More details

Though Her Majesty's Government have decided (rightly) to withdraw the House of Lords Reform Bill 2012 and not to pursue any reforms, there might be a bill soon to reform the House.

In any new reform bill, we the petitioners call for the Lord Spiritual to retain their seats in the House and at a high enough number.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester (who must all sit ex officio regardless) and between 17, 18 and 21 bishops should sit either due to length of service (as is the current arrangement) or elected by the Church of England.

The Church of England is the established church and Her Majesty is the Supreme Governor of it. The bishops represent the faith and speak also for the poorest people whom the Church is committed to helping.

No other faith deserves ex officio seat as no other faith is established.

The bishops must retain their historic seat in Parliament in any reformed Upper House.
