Rejected petition What's the point of e petitions

With the protect the police pensions e petition nearing 100,000 signatures an email got send which basically said that the decision has already been made and would be going forward regardless of the result of the e petition and it may not even be debated in the commons. I thought that this was the point of the e petition? I say do away with this useless gimmick which is another waste of time and hope....just like this government.
