Petition Modification of existing statutory tenancies
More details
Much strife is caused for both tenants and landlords by the system that has allowed 'sitting tenancies' (usually referred to as statutory tenancies) to come into existence and be misused in various ways by landlords, tenants, various criminal elements.
I propose that these tenancies (in particular those left over from Rent Act 1968, Housing Act 1977 and modifications thereto in 1988) should now be changed to become ordinary periodic tenancies subject to the current rules governing renting - and that the rents set by rent officers for these tenancies should be in no way different to those rents which would apply to any other ordinary tenancies.
The advantges gained for the public generally by this small change should be:
Less corruption
More choice for tenants.
Less temptation for those landlords (or tenants, I believe) who are dishonest to hire hitmen or use other criminal methods to deal with their tenants(landlords).
