John Surtees has won the Motorcycling World championship, the F1 worldchampionship, numerous other races, Done a lot of work with and on behalf of young drivers and now runs a charity named after is late son, The Henry Surtees trust. all this starting in the 1950s and still continues now. Respect to Bradley Wiggins and the like, but they have done a lot less and have been made knights, so why not Big John.
