Rejected petition pavement maintenance costs

More details

Put the maintenance of pavements and grass verges under the highways budget.

Far too many pavements and verges are being degraded by ignorant motorists who seem to think they can park anywhere.

Anyone with mobility issues gets blocked by work vans parking half way across the pavement. If they damage the pavement it can take years (decades even) before the repairs are done because local councils don't see pavements as a priority when compared to keeping motorists happy.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

The duty to maintain the highway set out in the Highways Act 1980 covers footways (pavements) as well as carriageways. How local authorities allocate their highways maintenance budgets is a matter for each authority. You may wish to resubmit your e-petition calling on central Government to direct local authorities to take certain action (a power which central Government doesn't currently have).

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
