Rejected petition Routine arming of the Police

A petition to call on the Government of the day to allow all Police Officers to be routinely armed.

At present we have a position where only Authorised Firearms Officers carry firearms and as a result, it often takes far too long for officers to arrive at emergency incidents where firearms may be required. Recent events, such as officer shootings at home, and the mass shootings in Norway, highlight the need to have properly prepared and equipped officers available to respond.

Armed officers would not change the face of Policing, a side-arm, although visible, would not be imposing or restrict interaction with the general public.
