Closed petition Litter and rubbish on our roadsides and in our hedgerows

Closed on

The government needs to develop a national strategy for dealing with the mountains of litter and rubbish which currently desecrate roadside verges and hedgerows across Britain.

The quality and visual attractiveness of our roadside verges and hedgerows are a national disgrace. Bottles, tin-cans, plastic bags and other forms of rubbish provide an unsightly backdrop to both residents and visitors from abroad as they travel around the country. The rubbish is not only unsightly but also a potential danger to wildlife and hazard to motorists.

It is hardly an advertisement for our ‘green and pleasant land’. The sides of our roads really are depressing when compared to their equivalent in most of Europe - Britain has truly become ‘the dirty man of Europe’.
