Why should cyclists get to use the UK road network for free?

In this time of austerity why should cyclists get their own lanes and preferential treatment on some roads - when they contribute nothing?
Why should cyclists use the road network for free to indulge their hobby when other hobbyists have to buy licenses (i.e. Fishing, flying, boating the list goes on)?

This is patently unfair to road tax payers and it is time to stop – Cyclists to pay road tax.
