Simplification of the planning regulations could the housing crisis by;

1. Defining minimum standards for all new dwellings.

2. Expanding availability of land by expanding settlement boundaries.

3. Granting automatic approval of any planning application that meets or exceeds the specified minimum criteria within a settlement boundary/zone.

Please note, none of the foregoing prevents tighter restrictions withing conservation areas, AONB, SSI, etc; nor would it preclude the ability to apply conditions such that a new dwelling would fit well in it's environment.
