Closed petition Abolish the two-tier council system and create unitary authorities

Closed on

The two tier system of local governance is costly and confusing.

We would like to see true localism enacted, with parish councils, community groups and businesses, and individuals given greater control over the assets and local services in their communities.

In addition, the departments own figures shows that combining district, borough and county councils into one or more unitary authorities in the same area can reap substantial savings, in the millions of pounds a year.

Therefore, we would like the two tier system to be dismantled in the 27 counties where it still persists, and a system of unitary authorities set up in its place, thus saving money, making local government more transparent, and delivering a meaningful localism agenda
