A GP of African origin was cleared of fraud at Kingston crown court in 2009. The judge publicly agreed with the jury’s verdict and warned the NHS Counter Fraud Service, now known as NHS Protect, to think “long and hard” before bringing a similar case to court. The trial cost £1.5 million and the total cost to the NHS was estimated at £3 million.
A GMC panel later admitted there had been a “manifest injustice” in the way it had handled her case.
The NHS should be investigated for what supporters called a 'vendetta'.
