Rejected petition Enshrine free speech on social media where no laws have been broken.

The government should look to enshrine the requirement for social media companies to uphold freedom of speech and expression where no law is being broken. Penalties should be imposed where this is impinged.

More details

When the world wide web was first developed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, he saw it as an opportunity to spread knowledge and information far and wide. Social media took it forward in connecting the masses, encouraging them to share their hopes and dreams, aspirations and worries for all to see.

Sadly we now see large tech companies limiting the right to self expression. This will only lead to further polarisation of opinion which left unchecked can be explosive. We need free speech!

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We understand you want the Government to require social media platforms to "uphold freedom of speech", however it's not clear what you mean by this, nor which specific actions you want the Government to take to achieve this.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
