Rejected petition Make any referendum relating to the union require the consent of Westminster

The Scotland act (1998) clearly classifies the Union as a reserved matter (something only Westminster can legislate on), but there is confusion around if this includes referendums on the union. To clear up any confusion it should be made explicitly clear that referendums need Westminster’s consent.

To avoid a ‘Catalonia’ like situation in the United Kingdom, which threatens both the stability of our country and the economy of its members, it should be made clear that Westminster is authority that must approve referendums which relate to the union. No government should waste time or energy on a ‘wildcat referendum’ which would only cause confusion, waste tax payers money and create discourse amongst our citizens.
