Closed petition Decriminalise recreational drugs
Closed on
It is quite clear that the war on drugs has failed; users who do no harm to others are branded as criminals, and addicts are forced to commit crimes to fund their addictions. Legislation to decriminalise the use and supply of recreational drugs, while mindful of the objective dangers, would allow government revenue to be obtained from licensed sales of high quality products in order to
• Decrease the supply of drugs cut with dangerous substances
• Fund education and study of the effects and mechanisms of addiction and drug use with a view to reducing the dangers
• Pull the rug from under the feet of the real criminals – those who currently exploit the weak, vulnerable, desperate and curious.
• Reduce the prison population
