Important:

This petition was submitted during the 2019-2024 parliament

Rejected petition Prevent the ‘big six’ Premier League teams from joining a European Super League.

(I) Enact legislation to outlaw this action; or ( (II) Pressurise the Football Association (FA) to levy penalties, monetary and/or non-monetary, on the football clubs involved.

More details

As a governmental public institution with law making powers and influence over domestic associations, it is in the public interest to take such appropriate action. Not only does it potentially infringe upon anti-competitive provisions, it will have a devastating financial impact on non-participating football clubs, particularly in relation to a sustained period of economic restructuring enforced by the ongoing global pandemic.

Why was this petition rejected?

We can't publish petitions when the request is something that's already happening or something that has been announced since you started your petition.

We think your petition is covered by Government or Parliament action already. If you'd like something else, you could start a new petition clearly explaining what it is.

We understand you're concerned about English clubs joining the proposed European Super League, however since you started your petition the Government has clearly expressed its opposition to the plans and the six participating English clubs have all withdrawn, as you may know.

On Monday 19 April the Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden MP said that he was appalled by the announcement that a handful of clubs are proposing to form their own breakaway European league, ands said the Government would not hesitate to protect one of our greatest national institutions: football. The Culture Secretary said that the Government would back the football authorities to stop this move, and if the football authorities couldn’t act, the Government would. The Culture Secretary said the Government would "put everything on the table to prevent this from happening."

Further, on 19 April the Government announced a 'Fan-led review of football governance', which will explore ways of improving the governance, ownership and financial sustainability of clubs in English football, building on the strengths of the football pyramid.
