Rejected petition Change/stop the use of "May Contain" on food products to escape liability

The term "May Contain" is loosely used on packaging to protect business from liability if an allergen reacts to their product making most foods that should be allergen-friendly not anymore scaring allergens away from the product because of the false risk.

More details

I would like the government to make food products less risky for allergens and oblige food factories to take more responsibility in assuring customers when buying their products free-from any ingredients that are not in the product and not use use the phrase "May Contain" to protect their business. As an example I cannot have Bourbon biscuits anymore because Tesco added "May Contain sesame seeds" and since the addition of this prices dropped as it was not considered "Free-From" anymore.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do. We're not sure whether you want allergens to be included in the list of ingredients of products even if they're not guaranteed to be present, or to remove potential allergens from packing if they're not definitely in a product.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
