Rejected petition Make it compulsory to have a verified Social Media account to publicly comment
Make it compulsory for all social media platform operators to require users to have their ID verified in order for users to publicly comment. Users would still be able to create and operate unverified accounts (such as amongst ‘friends’) but not comment on public accounts unless verified.
More details
Predominately to stop online abuse and anonymity but to overall encourage and promote a more responsible approach to posting online content/comments. Without the intervention of Government, Social Media companies/platforms are most unlikely to voluntarily introduce a new mechanism to require users to create a ‘verified’ account. Regrettably, there does need to be some compulsion here which only Government can introduce.
