Rejected petition Introduce coastal safety into the curriculum at all age levels.
We are an island nation. The seas and their perils surround us, yet the majority wouldn’t even know what a rip tide was, let alone how to identify one.
Coastal safety and marine awareness should be part of the curriculum for all age groups.
More details
How many adults in the U.K. could tell you the difference between a spring and neap tide? How many could tell you what flood and ebb mean? How many could identify a rip tide and other dangerous warning signs around our coast?
As an island nation, these factors are as critical as learning how to cross a road.
It’s not just a matter of safety, but a step towards learning to appreciate, respect and care for the marine environment that surrounds us all.

The national curriculum for physical education already requires schools to provide swimming instruction in key stage 1 or key stage 2, including how to swim competently, confidently and proficiently, and how to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-curriculum-in-england-physical-education-programmes-of-study/national-curriculum-in-england-physical-education-programmes-of-study#swimming-and-water-safety
