Rejected petition Change Parliamentary Protocol to allow MPs to accuse MPs of lying in Parliament
During a session, rules on 'Unparliamentary Language', mean that MPs risk being excluded from parliament for stating that an MP has lied.
This allows dangerous mistruths to go unchallenged despite clear evidence to the contrary, in the most important and powerful forum in the land.
More details
MPs, just like anyone else, are human beings & don't always behave with impeccable morality. They also bend the truth or lie when it suits them. Without means of challenging them directly, such behaviour is supported, when we need the leaders of our country to be accountable & encouraged to act ethically.
Otherwise we risk descending further into a dangerous, 'post-truth' reality, where it no longer matters if claims are factual but merely whether people can be convinced into believing them.
