Rejected petition European Advice on Scottish Independence

More details

The European Commission has stated that it is prepared to provide a formal opinion on an independent Scotland's status within the EU, if the UK Government submits a request for this opinion.

As a devolved administration the Scottish Executive has no legal right to seek such an opinion and as such it falls upon the current Westminster Government to seek this for clarification on the debate.

The referendum is the single biggest constitutional change in the UK, something which the future of the union stands upon. The significance of this issue means that both governments must do all in their power to seek facts and further clarify the debate for the voters.

it would be highly irresponsible not to seek this advice and this petition calls upon the Prime Minister to submit a formal request to the Commission for their formal opinion.
