Rejected petition Halt the use of mesh rectopexy until more is know about its health implications

We ask that a halt be put on mesh rectopexy in order for its complication rates be more understood. There has been a distinct lack of data over the last 20 years due to no clinical code. There needs to be retrospective investigation and the procedure be suspended until true figures can be audited

More details

Mesh rectopexy cause catastrophic post op complications, It also has huge financial implications on the NHS due to the amount of care required by patients caused by the adverse affects of the mesh implant. Patients experience chronic pain, nerve damage, partial bowel removal, bladder dysfunction and a long list of other associated complications. By suspending mesh rectopexy and undertaking a retrospective investigation there would be better understanding of its long term risks.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Petitions must call for a specific action that the UK Government or House of Commons is responsible for.

Decisions about patient care, including operations like mesh rectopexies, are a matter for the NHS and individual clinicians, not the Government or House of Commons. As a result it is not possible for the Government or House of Commons to take the action you have requested.

We could accept a petition calling on the Government to review the safety of this procedure, and the wellbeing of patients who have previously had this operation.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
