Rejected petition Introduce routine testing for Group B Streptococcus during late pregnancy

Group B Streptococcus is a bacteria which is common in pregnancy, the bacteria can spread to the baby during labour and potentially make them seriously ill. It is not routinely tested for in the UK, yet can have severe outcomes such as meningitis and sepsis, and in some circumstances can be fatal.

More details

We are unfortunate enough to be a family affected by Group B Strep, our newborn fell seriously ill from the bacteria, causing sepsis and meningitis, resulting in severe brain damage and hydrocephalus. As a new family, we are absolutely heartbroken to know this could have been avoided if only the correct information and testing were in place at the onset.
In putting this petition forward we hope that we can help other families avoid going through similar trauma and potentially save lives.
