The 26 seats in the House of Lords permanently reserved for the bishops and archbishops of the Church of England are an anachronism and an unfair and discriminatory religious privilege. They have no place in a modern democratic parliament.

Bishops, archbishops and other clerics should be appointed individually on merit on the same basis as other members of the House of Lords, they should not be appointed purely because of their office.
