Important:

Rejected petition Remove fines as a means to penalise people as they mainly harm poorer people.

Other means of achieving justice or holding people responsible for their actions should be used.

There are many, many charities and care and support organisations that would benefit from people carrying out community payback activities instead of making them pay meaningless fines.

More details

Legislation should be passed to make organisation and the justice system consider all community payback options before a financial penalty is considered.

If a fine is to be imposed there should be a calculation system developed that guarantees that people on higher incomes suffer as much as someone on a poorer income would. This should take into account savings and assets.

The government should ensure equality in how the public are treated by ensuring that everyone experiences it the same.

This petition was rejected

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We understand that you would like to see changes to the way fines are used in sentencing, but we're not sure exactly what action you'd like the Government or Parliament to take.

You could start a new petition calling on the Government to abolish fines if that is something you would like to see happen, or you could start a new petition explaining clearly what action you would like the Government to take.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
