Rejected petition Do not remove gender reassignment from the equality act
Do not go forward with proposed plans to remove gender reassignment as a protected characteristic from the equalities act
More details
The only possible reason that the government could have for removing gender reassignment as a protected characteristic would be because they wish to pass laws that, under the current equalities act, would be illegal. This move is a blatant indication of their plans to strip away the rights of trans people, and would open the doors for a massive increase in the marginalisation of a group that is already heavily discriminated against, as shown by the government’s own recent hate crime statistics
This petition was rejected
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.
Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. We understand that you are concerned about the possibility of legal rights for trans people being reduced, but the Government has not announced any plans to change the Equality Act, or remove legal protections for trans people.
It has been reported that the Government may look to amend the Equality Act to make it clear that sex means biological sex rather than gender, and we could accept a petition calling on the Government to commit not to making this change.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
