Rejected petition Stop HMRC selling taxpayer's data to HMRC contractors and private firms
More details
Ban HMRC selling or sharing taxpayer's data to HMRC contractors and private companies.
The private tax data of individual citizens were given to the HMRC in good faith on the condition it remained private and confidential and was not shared outside of their own database.
HMRC has released the VAT register to Experian, Equifax and Dun and Bradstreet under the guise that they are contracted to the HMRC and therefore 'treated as part of the department'. This underhand manner in which data was shared is a clear indication that they are fully aware they are in breach of privacy regulation.
Legislation should be tabled strengthening our privacy laws to prevent our data being made accessible to contracted companies.
It is an intrusion and will break any trust which exists between the HMRC and the taxpayer.
