A rise in the speed limit to 80mph makes sense In 2014 due to:

-Vastly improved car safety leading to a long term trend of a reduced number of motorway causalities.

-Already the norm on British Motorways, with the majority of road users already travelling above the 70mph current limit..

-Opportunity to boost UK economy by reducing travel times and congestion.

-The UK speed limit is currently out of touch with the rest of Europe, with Italy and France having an 81mph equivalent speed limit on their motorways and Germany with no speed limit at all.
