Petition Take forward the Mental Health Bill to reform the Mental Health Act 1983
We want the Government to bring forward legislation to reform the Mental Health Act, which was promised in 2017 and 2019 manifestos but was not included in the recent King's Speech.
More details
We believe the Mental Health Act 1983 is dangerously outdated and makes it too easy for people to be detained, and treated against their will, and too difficult to be discharged.
Mental health affects 1 in 4 of us within the UK and every year tens of thousands of people are detained under the Mental Health Act, and BAME people have higher rates of detention than white people.
The Government has published a draft Bill that would make a number of amendments to the Mental Health Act 1983, including to raise the threshold for detention and have more regular reviews of detention, and give mental health patients great rights to make choices about the treatment they receive. We want this legislation to be taken forward.
