Petition Demand Change to Burma's 2008 Constitution
More details
Burmese Constitution Amendments
Aung San Suu Kyi said, "If Burma is truly to be on the road to democracy we have to amend this constitution." The Constitution was drafted by the military junta. The referendum to approve the Constitution was imposed on a people traumatised, by the devastation of Cyclone Nargis.
It guarantees 25% of seats to the army, and requires more than 75% of parliamentarians to amend the constitution.
It grants the Commander in Chief of the Military power over constitutional amendments.
It reserves key cabinet positions; Defense, Home Affairs and Border Affairs for military personnel.
It gives the military sweeping emergency powers, total legal autonomy over its own affairs, and allows it immunity.
It stops Burma’s judiciary from being free and independent and discriminates against gender and ethnic groups.
The UK must request Burma to amend its Constitution in line with international standards.
The NLD campaign deadline is 19th July, 2014.
