Petition Four year trial of lighter evenings all year (Single/Double Summer time) to start in 2016

More details

The Department for Transport to take the lead in implementing a 4 year trial period of lighter evenings all year (Single/Double Summer time). The evidence is that this would benefit the whole of the UK. The costs are far outweighed by the benefits such as:

1. Reductions in road fatalities of around 80 and serious injuries by at least 200 per year,
2. CO2 emissions reduced by around 400,000 tonnes per year and reduced energy bills
3. Increased tourist income by £3bn per year.
4. Sharing the same time zone as many European countries, and an increase in overlap of business hours with Asia and Australia.
5. Many more opportunities for sports, leisure and gardening to improve people’s wellbeing and health

The trial will start in October 2016 when British Summertime (GMT +1hr) will be observed during the winter then Double Summertime (GMT +2hrs) will apply from late March to late October in 2017. The public will be consulted before the end of the trial as to future options.
