Taking account of the riots at the weekend and investigations into the present chief and his deputy and the lack of transparency of the Met, the Home Secretary should not restrict the search for a new chief to UK nationals. The recruitment of Bill Bratton would serve to bring a genuinely new broom into the Met, what is more, a new broom that has a commendable track record.
