We the undersigned note that

1. the DWP funeral payment is £700

2. a typical funeral costs £3 500

3. the DWP payment has been the same for 10 years

4. funeral costs are rising by 7.1% a year – more than 3 times inflation

5. funeral poverty is up 121% since 2010

6. local councils are arranging many more funeral under the Public Health Act 1948

We call on DWP to make a substantial increase in the funeral payment and index to funeral costs in future
