Petition General Election - No MP Option
More details
The historical poor turnout of voters is documented and needs addressing, as it is disgraceful that an MP can be selected with less than 20% of the registered electorate.
The simple and obvious answer is to add an additional box stating:
"No candidate returned".
This gives the registered voter a real choice to vote for one of the campaigning candidates or, in light of various factors, consciously decide that for this political term, no candidate is worthy of electing.
It could be that they believe the options did not offer value, won't make a difference or in times of austerity, the cost savings are worthwhile.
The constituents will still have a voice through their local councillors and there are media and channels to ensure their voice can be heard.
As this is a simple amendment to the next Election, cost effective and covers all bases, if not included, then we do not have a fair democracy.
