Closed petition prisons should be run as a business

prisons should be put in to the private sector and should be run as a business to make profit and afford themselves. prisoners should be put to work in recycling centers and other basic work places. businesses across the UK would pay the owner of the prison X amount to use his workforce to carry out basic work with the prisoners themselves getting a few pence a day. however the money is not the selling point for prisoners the selling point is that they can work 9-5, get small benefits such as larger meals and also show they are changed men and women who are willing to slot back in to society. i realize that this idea is not as simple as i am making it out to be however criminals are walking free because of prison overcrowding and they are a massive drain on our country and its resources.
