In riot situations, as seen around the country in august 2011 where the police are struggling to keep control of volatile, quickly moving and often out of control crowds, water cannons may quickly deter and disperse crowds. They are proven to be very effective in areas with long lasting conflict, and in extreme circumstances should be available to the UK police forces
