The Highways agency is about to start switching off and permanently removing motorway lighting on the M1 in Bedfordshire.

A move which will spread to the entire UK network eventually, and inevitably lead to serious accidents. These stretches were previously identified as needing lighting due to traffic volumes and perceived risk.

The government should halt this and reinstate any lighting that is removed before this leads to an increase in road deaths.
