Important:

This petition was submitted during the 2015-2017 parliament

Rejected petition Allow the song 'English Rose' by Paul Weller to be England's National Anthem.

Due to the devolution process England needs her own National Anthem. 'English Rose' by Paul Weller is a stirring modern patriotic song and has no religious, war, Imperialism, British or royal references etc therefore will not be divisive and will be more widely acceptable and unifying.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

This isn’t something that the UK Government or Parliament would be able to do. There is at present no anthem for England. The use of the present National Anthem is a matter of tradition rather than having any legal or constitutional status.

You can find more information about the history and status of the national anthem here:

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
