Closed petition Make bridging hormone prescriptions easier to obtain for transgender people
Closed on
The NHS constitution states that people must wait no longer than 18 weeks for an initial specialist appointment. Gender Identity Clinics are currently at least twice this. Many GPs currently refuse to prescribe hormones, despite the fact that for some, they are life saving treatments.
The WPATH standards of care (2011) suggest the prescribing of an interim ‘bridging’ prescription for a few months while the patient is referred to a gender specialist and an endocrinologist - http://www.rcpsych.ac.uk/files/pdfversion/CR181_Nov15.pdf
If an individual has socially transitioned the GP may prescribe hormones - estrogen for trans women and testosterone for trans men - there is every indication that they are safe and effective.
