Closed petition Reject any statutory instrument preventing McKenzie Friends charging a fee

Closed on

In February 2016, the UK Judiciary quietly published a Consultation paper on reforming their approach to McKenzie Friends (MFs) who are (non-Solicitor/Barrister helpers). The Judiciary proposes preventing MFs from charging fees, regulating them, yet no have the right to 'represent' you for Court.

The Presidents Guidance on McKenzie Friends 2010 gives the judges discretion to permit your MF to act for you and manage your case. It is very rare to get permission. The Employment Tribunals Act 1998 s6 provides that a person may appear in person or else be represented at an employment tribunal by: (a) counsel/ solicitor, (b) a rep of a trade union or an employers’ association, or (c) any other person in whom the party desires to represent him. The same rights should apply in family courts.
