Closed Make the abuse and neglect of older people a crime

The constant reports of abuse and neglect of older people has gone on for too long. We are calling for such cruelty to be an aggravated criminal offence with statutory minimum sentences. This covers physical and sexual assault, financial and psychological abuse, and neglect.

Most abusers are never charged, or if they are, they receive suspended sentences or community service. There are aggravated offences for Hate Crime, recognising basic charges are not enough. We want the same for older people. Action on Elder Abuse is a UK-wide charity that aims to protect and prevent the abuse of vulnerable older people.
