Closed petition Reveal how many detainees reported being sexually assaulted/raped in Yarl’s Wood
Closed on
In response to a Freedom of Information request, The Home Office refused to reveal how many detainees have been sexually assaulted or raped inside Yarl’s Wood on the grounds that “disclosure would, or would be likely to, prejudice the commercial interests” of people involved with running Yarl’s Wood
The Independent submitted the FOI because many reports of sexual assault & abuse have been made against staff at Yarl’s Wood. Chief prisons inspector Nick Hardwick called the centre a “place of national concern”. The UN’s special rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo said she'd been refused entry to the centre by the Government
The Immigration Minister & Home Secretary must reveal the numbers, & stop putting the commercial interests of Serco above human rights of vulnerable people
