Petition Ban the transmission of 24 hour rolling news in the UK
More details
24 Rolling news is an unnecessary and unwarranted distraction from real life.
The formulaic and repetitive nature of 24 hour news
(man/woman 'at the scene' invariably for hours on end and with nothing to see, contrasted with panel in studio airing every single thought to come into their heads) leads to wild conjecture which is closer to Jeremy Kyle-style 'entertainment' than news. This is driven by a need to fill air time and 'entertain', rather than inform the viewing public.
It is also clear that the coverage of these channels contributed to the spread of unrest across the UK recently by endlessly showing footage of the earlier disturbances.
Furthermore, during periods of genuine crisis, these channels with their constant re-hashing of the same incidents every 15 minutes for days at a time only serve to distort the severity or seriousness of these events in the eyes of the viewer, and instil unnecessary fear in UK citizens.
