Closed petition Motorcycle Instructors to have a Disclosure and Barring Service check
Closed on
It is not compulsory for Motorcycle Instructors to have a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Previously known as a CRB check.
From the age of 16 you are eligible for Compulsive Basic Training (on a scooter) which means you can have 1:1 tuition from an approved Motorcycle Instructor.
A teaching profession which involves contact with young people should have DBS check as a mandatory requirement to safeguard the general public. NHS workers, teachers and approved driving instructors (ADI) all have a DBS check.
The Driving Standards and Vehicles Agency uses the loose term of 'Fit and Proper' to approve a Motorcycle Instructor. Those individuals who have a previous criminal record, or spent time in prison, can still become or continue their role as Motorcycle Instructor.
