Rejected petition Make changes to the electoral system so that voters are better represented

In our current system, an MP can be elected to parliament if only 30% of the electorate voted for them. Likewise, a political party can form a government with only 30% of MPs. At any given time, the majority of the population is being ruled by a government it did not ask for. This needs to change.

More details

There are 650 MPs. If we rank them all by this measure of legitimacy, the median MP won 30.1 per cent of their votes, which is very similar to the mean winning margin (30.6 per cent). [http://www.may2015.com/ideas/not-a-single-sitting-mp-won-a-majority-of-their-constituency/]

Ukip won 3.8m votes, the Greens 1.1m; but they won only one MP each in the election. In Margate, there is growing support for electoral reform. [http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/may/09/margate-ukip-greens-electoral-reform-farage]

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

It's not clear what kind of change you would like to see to the electoral system. Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
