Closed petition Impose stiffer penalties for hand held mobile phone use in vehicles.

Use of such phones is not diminishing . Evidence from police force videos shows drivers talking and texting or viewing smartphone content.

Current penalties are not fit for purpose.
The consequences of accidents caused by such drivers are totally unacceptable.

A Zero Tolerance deterrent is urgently needed to make the results of a conviction more meaningful to the driver and on a par with the offence of drink-driving.

- An immediate suspension of the driving licence upon apprehension

- On conviction, automatic 12 month disqualification, 6 points on the licence and £1000 fine, plus seizure of the mobile device.

- If convicted a second time, the courts should be allowed to impose unlimited disqualification, fine or even imprisonment.
