Rejected petition Change PACE rules for cautioning of suspect under certain circumstances
The eventual conviction of Christopher Halliwell for the murders of Sian O'Callaghan and Becky Godden is a case in point where the suspect was not cautioned at the required time because the police officer in charge deemed that it was the only way to get to the truth and find the bodies.
More details
The murders of Sian O'Callaghan and Becky Godden. DS Fulcher was disciplined and lost his job because he did not caution Halliwell at the time he confessed to the murder of Becky Godden (in accordance with PACE rules). DS Fulcher felt that impetus would be lost and Becky's body may not be found if the suspect had to go back to the police station to be cautioned.
