Closed petition Ask Andrea Leadsom to agree to a TOTAL ban on ivory sales including before 1947
Closed on
Demand for ivory has seen almost 150,000 elephants lost to poaching in under a decade.
On 21/9/16 Andrea Leadsom announced plans for a ban on sales of modern day ivory, but allowing trade before 1947.
CITES CoP17 taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa from 24 September to 5 October 2016.
DEFRA will consult on plans for the ban next year.
Environment Secretary Andrea Leadsom said:
The UK has a strong record as a global leader in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade and I’m determined to do all we can to bring an end to poaching and ivory trafficking.
"To do all that DEFRA can" would be to have a TOTAL ban on ivory sales before and after 1947.
Therefore I call on Andrea Leadsom to plan for a TOTAL ban on all ivory trade in and out of the UK.
