Closed petition Ensure all apprentices are paid the National Minimum Wage for their age.
Closed on
The current rate is £3.40 per hour as of October 2016, (rising to £3.50 as of April 2017) for apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. All other apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age)
Apprentices who earn just £3.40 an hour are struggling to make ends meet. This wage is not financially viable. In addition, an apprentice can spend a high proportion of their wage travelling to work.
Apprentices should be paid National Minimum Wage from the start.
Apprenticeships can be an important way for young people to get into employment and earn while they learn. But young workers should not be used as cheap labour. All young people deserve to be paid a decent minimum wage.
